Chapter Seventeen

Nate

I checked my watch and grinned when I saw I was almost on my break.

I had been planning all day to pick up some lunch and take it down to Ellie; I couldn’t wait till the end of it to see her again, I was already starting to miss her. It hadn’t been too busy since I had gotten in; I had mostly been checking up on Alex and getting things in place for his recovery and rehab once he was back on his feet—foot—and I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about my new girl all day.

We were really doing this. Really dating. The way she had reacted the night before when she’d thought Haley was some girlfriend of mine told me everything I needed to know. She wanted me all to herself, and honestly, I felt the same way.

I was trying to just focus on the present, because I had no idea what was going to happen long-term with us. I would figure it out when I had to, but for now, the only thing I cared about was making sure I showed her just how much I loved being with her. In a few weeks, maybe months, things would be different, but we could cross that bridge when we came to it.

I grabbed my phone and called her, planning to ask her what she wanted for lunch. I didn’t want to just drop in on her out of nowhere—I was sure she had plans for the day—but I was sure she would say yes. If she felt anything close to what I did, then she would want to get all the time she could with me, and I didn’t want to miss out on a minute of it.

She answered the phone after a couple of rings, and I could hear in her voice how exhausted she seemed.

“Hey, Nate.”

“Hey, Ellie,” I replied. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” she replied. Her voice sounded hollow. Had something happened? I would have heard about it if Celeste had taken a turn for the worse, so I was sure it wasn’t that, but it was clear something was on her mind.

“You sure?”

“I’m sure.”

“Okay, well,” I replied, figuring the best course of action was to give her something to look forward to. “How about I come down there with some lunch? It’s my break, I thought you might want to spend it together.”

“Oh,” she replied, sounding a little surprised. “Uh, I’m actually okay. I’m pretty busy down here right now.”

“That’s fine,” I assured her. “What about tonight? I could take us out for some pizza...”

“I’m good,” she told me. “I...I think I could use a little time to myself, you know? Just to...think. About stuff.”

“Yeah, of course,” I replied, but I felt a little let-down. I knew she didn’t owe me her time or anything, but I had been looking forward to seeing her, and I was more than a little thrown off that she didn’t seem to want to spend time with me.
